Clot it like it's Hot
I’m Neil Smith FRCVS, and I’m the Veterinary Director for Cresilon, the manufacturer of VETIGEL. This blog series will be interviews with veterinarians who want to share their experiences using VETIGEL; veterinarians who have discovered the benefits to their patients and clinics.
Like many veterinarians I had rarely used haemostatic products because they weren’t often available in the OR. Traditional haemostatic products are slow to stop bleeding, and they become an integral part of the clot. So many perceive little benefit over using gauze and pressure. This also means that we are accepting blood loss as normal, and which can be detrimental to the patient, and their recovery.
VETIGEL is a paradigm shift. It’s very easy to use, it’s flowable and therefore conforms to the geometry of a wound, and it literally stops bleeding in seconds. The fibrin patch that forms underneath it doesn’t adhere to the gel, or integrate with it. This means the chances of bleeding re-occurring are greatly reduced. VETIGEL should be available in the OR. For some procedures, such as multiple dental extractions, enucleations and mass removals, its use should be considered as routine.
Having used VETIGEL in my own sighthound who needed multiple teeth extracting, I would recommend it to any veterinarian performing surgical procedures. It stops bleeding, shortens operating times, and as you will hear in future blogs, saves lives.
