Why Jane Kinsell, MRCVS, Relies on VETIGEL® for Dental Extractions and Unexpected Bleeding

This week we speak to Jane Kinsell MRCVS, Clinical Director at Charlesworth Vet Surgery in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Jane has worked there for over 35 years.

How long have you been using VETIGEL®, and what have you used it for?

I’ve been using it for a few months now, maybe about a year. I’ve found it very useful for dental extractions, especially multiple extractions. What is great is that VETIGEL both shortens the procedure time and reduces blood loss.

Can you tell me about a case or cases where you’ve found VETIGEL really useful.

I really like using it if I need to extract canines in sighthounds. These can bleed quite profusely, and take a long time to stop. In a recent case VETIGEL made a real difference, reducing procedure time and blood loss. There was also much less post-op clean-up required, which saved the team time and is better for the patient.

What do you like about VETIGEL®?

It’s easy to use, doesn’t require any preparation. As it’s a hydrogel it flows well and is easy to use. It stops bleeding very quickly and the extraction sites heal very well. The reduced bleeding is not only good for the patient, but also means there is considerably less post op cleaning up to do. The nurses really appreciate that! It’s great to know that it’s there in case you get unexpected bleeding, or bleeding that is hard to control. The fact that the fibrin patch/clot doesn’t integrate with VETIGEL means that further exploration, such as with a fractured tooth root, is much easier as you have a clear field.

Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians/veterinary surgeons?

Yes, this is a product that improves patient care and shortens procedure time. It also gives you confidence that if something unplanned occurs, VETIGEL really helps by stopping bleeding in seconds. The fact that it can be removed, without restarting bleeding, if more surgical exploration is needed, is a real bonus.
