Charlie Roper, MRCVS
This week we speak to Charlie Roper MRCVS, who works at The Exotic Animal Vets in Manchester and The University of Liverpool, where she qualified from in 2021.
How long have you been using VETIGEL®, and in how many procedures have you used it?
“I’ve been using it for the last 2 years, and have used it in probably 50 procedures.”
Can you give me some examples?
“I used it when removing a mass from a Guinea Pig. It was very vascular and VETIGEL was a massive help in controlling and stopping the bleeding. This was obviously much better for the patient than just using pressure and time in terms of blood loss and duration of the anaesthetic.
Another good example was a Bearded Dragon spay. The uterine tissue was very friable and ligatures were just cutting through. So I used VETIGEL and it controlled the bleeding really well.”
What do you like about VETIGEL®?
“It’s easy to use, and also great that it doesn’t become part of the clot. This means you can have a clear surgical field if you need to explore further.
I’ve definitely had patients that would otherwise have died survive because VETIGEL works so well in stopping bleeding. It’s great to have it available not only for routine use, such as in enucleations, but also when unexpected bleeding occurs.”
What else can you tell me about your use of VETIGEL®?
“It shortens procedure times, improves patient recovery, increases survival rate and reduces anxiety about difficult surgeries.”
Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians?
“Yes, it really makes a difference. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll always want to have it to hand. But it’s important to use it once you’ve got it in procedures such as enucleations, as this will improve your confidence in using it when the unexpected happens.”
