Dr. Lisa Booth on VETIGEL® for Trauma and K9 Care
This week we speak to Dr Lisa Booth, who owns Hero Pet Animal Hospital in NW Indiana, and also runs the non-profit Kits for K9s (www.kitsfork9s.org).
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Effective for Trauma Cases: Dr. Lisa Booth finds VETIGEL effective in stopping bleeding quickly, especially in penetrating injuries and other trauma cases.
- Potential for K9 First Aid Kits: She sees a crucial role for VETIGEL in K9 handler first aid kits, as it could help control bleeding in working dogs until they can receive veterinary care.
- Expanding Applications in Dentistry: She plans to use VETIGEL in canine and feline dental extractions, anticipating reduced procedure time and minimized blood loss.
How long have you been using VETIGEL®?
“I started using it about a year ago.”
What do you like about VETIGEL®?
“I love that it’s a gel. Much easier to use than powders or sponges.”
Tell me about some of the procedures you’ve found benefited from the use of VETIGEL®?
“It’s great for trauma cases, such as penetrating injuries. I’ve found it works really well, stops bleeding very quickly.”
I see you run Kits for K9s, do you see a role for VETIGEL® in K9 handlers’ first aid kits?
“I’d love to see VETIGEL® in their first aid kits. Obviously, handlers have to be trained so they are using it under the direction of a veterinarian. But the real benefit would be if a dog is injured, the handler will be able to stop the bleeding and transport the dog to a veterinarian, who may be some distance away. VETIGEL® will buy time and could save lives.”
You have clearly had a positive experience with VETIGEL®; what other areas do you think it should be considered for?
“I’m intending to use it in canine and feline dental extractions. I expect VETIGEL® will significantly reduce both procedure time and blood loss.”
Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians?
“Yes, but not just veterinarians. I do think it has a real role to play in helping to protect working dogs who do so much to protect us.”
